I’ve been meaning to get out and test my pedometer watch a bit more but the cold weather and wet conditions have provided enough excuses for me to stay inside and work sudoku puzzles or read books (work has been slow this week). After missing Bandera, I know I’m in need of a long run but just can’t muster the motivation to go out there and put in the miles. I would really rather run on the trails, but they are likely very muddy and need a few more days to dry. However, with Rocky Raccoon coming up, some long and flat distance would probably be a good thing.

And speaking of Rocky, I am still deciding on travel plans. Right now the most comfortable option seems to be flying in on Friday afternoon, attending the pre-race stuff, and then settling into a Huntsville hotel. I have the right gear to turn it into a camping weekend, but I am thinking a soft bed will be really nice to have after the 50 and before I head to the Dam Road Aid Station for a night of volunteering with Deborah and NTTR.

With regards to upcoming races, I filled out my registration for the FANS 24 hour run in June. That check is in the mail. Since I bought the plane ticket last month, I can officially tell myself there should be no backing out now.

One of my goals for the year is to help out at more races. Volunteering is just a good thing and it will help me with the required trail work qualification when I decide to enter a hundred miler.

I got started volunteering back at the Sunrise Marathon in March of 2003. This was actually the last race Mickey Rollins directed (at least I was told so at the time). I worked the start/finish aid table along with members of HCTR.

Recently I helped out at the Murrell Park aid station at the Rockledge Rumble. I managed the split timing and helped the aid station director figure out who was still out on the course in the late stages of the race. I stayed there from start to finish and had a really great time talking to club members and meeting new people.

So this year at Bandera, I’ll be helping out with packet pickup from 2pm on Friday and then at the Last Chance aid station after I complete the 50K. I’m taking my tent once again (as I did in 2003) so it will pretty much be an entire weekend of Bandera!

I’m not sure what I wrote, but this was a 9 mile run starting at 5:30am before volunteering at the Murrell Park aid station for the Rockledge Rumble 15K/30K/50K. I mainly worked on keeping track of split times and got to meet several club members (Glenn, Nancy, Fred and Char, and Linda). I stayed for the entire race (had a really great time!) and then hauled the trash back to Jackson Pavilion.
